One of the easiest and simplest DIY christmas gifts to make for a cake decorating friend or indeed any friend, is a pedestal cake stand. The beautiful cake stands above are made simply from candlesticks and decorative plates, glued together with a strong DIY adhesive glue which you can get in any DIY store.
The candlesticks were sprayed with cream paint and given a “distressed” finish using sandpaper for that shabby chic look. To make a set of matching cake stands, use candlesticks of varying heights to make a collection of three or four – what cake decorating buddy wouldn’t be delighted with this as a Christmas gift? (Image and tutorial from Bayside Bride and Krista A. Jones Photography).
While a cream cake stand is a great all-rounder to showcase any cake, you can also go for a jazzier style too to complement different cake colour schemes and designs. To create a more opulent style cake stand, add beads or pearls around the edge for a decadent or vintage look. The beautiful cake stand below left is bordered with clusters of silver pearls and is by Delightfully Lovely (available to purchase from their store on Etsy). You’ll find a tutorial here for another beautiful vintage DIY cake stand with hanging crystals from Wedding Chicks.
A collection of pedestal cake stands in different pastel shades is another great set to have for parties and sweet tables (from Delightfully Lovely above). But if you’re spray-painting the cake plates, keep this set for yourself because you will have to ensure a doile or cake card is placed under the cake before serving at all times for food safety reasons. But there’s no reason you can’t hunt down some pastel colour plates and then spray paint the pedestals to match if you’re giving them as a gift.
We have a range of colours and shapes below left to inspire your creativity via Minted. On the right, a up-turned pie dish is used to create a very pretty DIY cake stand from Drama Queen At Work (right)
And it’s not just candlesticks that can be used for pedestals either – vases or other shaped containers can be used to create a beautiful diy cake stand. Sweet Sugarbelle created the eye-catching bold-coloured collection below left and have a tutorial here: DIY cake stands
