With lemon bridesmaid dresses a key trend for the 2014 wedding season, lemon wedding cakes are set to be a popular request next year. While lemon-flavoured cake has always been a popular choice for spring and summer wedding cakes, lemon-coloured icing will be the colour of choice for summer brides next year looking for a slightly less-traditional wedding cake.
Although it’s not an obvious choice, lemon-tinted icing also happens to be a great “backdrop” colour for many other palettes. Our feature cake above from Cakes & Biscuits by Lisa (Australia) showcases this perfectly with lemon icing complementing the pink floral decoration. A lemon-tinted icing would also work great with lilacs, soft blues and shades of green. UK brides need to be reassured that icing doesn’t always have to be white or ivory! Lemon icing makes perfect sense for a lemon-flavoured cake and you can still add flowers to match the bride’s chosen colour scheme.
The textured buttercream effect on the feature cake (top left) can be created using an patterned icing scraper available at all good cake decorating stores. Craftsy have a free online class, “Modern Buttercream” which shows you how to create textured buttercream effects: Free Online Cake Decorating Class.
Top London cake designer, Peggy Porschen, has of course been one of the first designers to spot the trend and has already featured a beautiful lemon wedding cake in buttercream for her “Patisserie” wedding collection this year (above left). It’s a fabulous cake decorated in the classic baroque style with sumptuous piped scroll work.
Chicago’s Cake Girls have also designed a very elegant lemon wedding cake with a chic centred sugar flower arrangement – perfect for a pretty summer wedding (above right).
