Fabulous vintage style bows and dramatic structural bows are coming through in bridalwear collections this season and this week we have put together a selection of some of the most beautiful wedding cakes with dramatic bow centrepieces to inspire your own creations.
Above, a beautiful period style wedding gown is adorned with a lady-like bow from the Mira Zwillinger Wedding Dress Collection and on the right, we think this fabulous cake design Sweet on Cake would make the perfect wedding cake complement with its luxuriant bow and delicate lace details.
Priya Maclure of SugarPot, Australia is famed for her wedding dress inspired cakes featuring stunning fabric effects, including the fabulous bow wedding cake design above.
Blissfully Sweet have topped their pretty rosette piped buttercream cake below with a simple double bowed ribbon which makes the perfect finishing touch. On the right, another of Sweet on Cake’s stylish bow wedding cakes, this time accented with peach florals.
A jaunty vintage style bow in pinstripe with a cameo brooch centre adds a whimsical vintage touch to this stylish trio of cakes below (image via Pinterest). You can see more vintage locket cakes in our earlier feature here: Vintage Jewellery & Locket Cakes.
Dusky pink ribbon loops held together with jewelled pins and trailing ribbon ends make a fabulous adornment on the wedding cake below left.

Edible Essence Cake Art, Plymouth have designed the beautiful vintage wedding cake (below left) in a beautiful palette of lavender and pinks adorned with vintage pearls and a statement bow with trailing ribbon ends.
On the right, Cheryl’s Cake Boutique couture bow styling is complemented with silvered lace for another fabulous vintage design.
A sugar brooch adds a superb vintage touch to a bow accent and with Karen Davies hugely popular brooch mould, you have a selection of shapes to choose from that you will use time and time again.
Trailing ribbon ends emerging from an explosion of soft pink summer roses makes a fabulous floral wedding cake design by Scrumdiddly (below left). On the right, Rachel Teufel of Intricate Icings has paired a selection of pink garden flowers with intricately wound ombred ribbon for one of her signature “fabric effects” designs that are her specialty.
A spectualar voluminous bow in off-white is accessoried by a luxe ivory peony for a beautiful bridal design by Jelly Cake UK, a design that would work wonderfully with a statement bow wedding dress such as the design from the Le Spose di Glo, Italy collection below.
When crafting fabric effect statement bows, it’s best to use sugar flowerpaste/gumpaste to create a finer fabric effect. Because of its strength versus fondant, it’s also much easier to work with when creating large size bows.
(Bulk packs (1kg) of Squires Sugar Florist Paste are currently on offer here at £13.25 with free UK delivery, if you are planning to stock up for a bow-making session).
Sugarcrafted bows can also add fabulous detailing to contemporary style cake designs with two exquisite examples in black and white below by Miso Bakes (left) and Eva Salazar of Make Me My Cake (right).
