While handbag cakes and designer shoe cakes have always been a firm favourite for fashion fans, the newest cake design for fashionistas is the mannequin cake – dressed in couture of course!
The trend has been pioneered by our two feature cake designers above – the UK’s Pimp My Cake (above left) and by Sugary Winzy in the US (above right).
Pimp My Cake have created a full picture tutorial below to show you how to make your own mannequin or tailor’s dummy cake. One of my favourite design features of this cake is the bed of flowers at the base of the cake – a finishing touch that really adds wow to this cake.
Our second feature cake (top right) was inspired by a vintage blue Betsey Johnson gown. You’ll find the full tutorial here from Sugary Winzy, as well as tutorials for the pink mannequin and ivory mannequin cakes below.
For a very formal gown complete with jewellery, Cinderella Cakes have created the exquisite cake below left. Sweet Bites Cakes on the other hand have gone for an LBD (or little black dress) for their beautiful fashionista cake below right that would make a great cake for a teenager or 21st birthday party.
The bridal mannequin cake (below left) was made for a bridal shower/hen party and makes a great cake for this style of occasion – you’ll find a tutorial here from Jenny Crafts . A black torso mannequin is very effective against coloured gowns and adds a “high end” look to the cake design. We have an exquisite example below right from The Strawberry Lane Cake Company of a 1950’s style prom dress cake that would impress any fashion darling for her 21st birthday party!
If you don’t fancy modelling a sugar mannequin but still want to incorporate a fashion designer’s dummy into a celebration cake, a small wire mannequin would work great as a cake topper, as our chic example below left by Cake Envy, Melbourne shows.
For our Aussie readers, Inspired By Michelle Cakes run a class on how to make the pink and black striped mannequin cake below right. Michelle also comes to England to teach from time to time to keep an eye on her blog above.
