A fusion of two major cake decorating trends – beautiful sugar flowers and brightly coloured handpainted details – decorating with 2D floral cut-outs is one of the most vibrant and striking cake design trends of the moment.
It’s a design style pioneered by Natasha Collins of Nevie Pie Cakes who has brought so much to the art of cake decorating in the past few years by introducing the world to the possibilities of cake painting.
One of Natasha’s latest wedding cake designs is featured above, seamlessly blending handpainted floral motifs on the cake surface with two dimensional floral cut-outs for a beautiful effect in a fabulous colour palette.
Cake star, Stevi Auble of Hey There Cupcake has also been working with beautiful floral plaques, interweaving them with her signature wafer paper blooms for an amazing multi-dimensional wedding cake design (above left).
A second design with painted floral cut-outs by Nevie Pie Cakes features above left in fabulous muted pastels.
Helen Devine of Oh Gateaux, Ireland created her beautiful striped wedding cake below with printed floral icing sheet cut-outs applied to shaped plaques for a stunning floral enhancement.
One of Nevie Pie’s earlier handpainted cake designs (below left) featured a stunning cascade of painted florals applied as separate cut-out plaques and extending above the top tier for a fabulous extra-dimensional effect, finished with a fabulous foral ribbon.
Below right, PJ Parker of Emily Harmston Cakes creates a magical blend of fresh florals – English garden style – with beautifully painted floral appliques in a vintage duck egg blue design below.
Peonies, rosebuds and an exotic handpainted bird grace this stunning blue-wash wedding cake design below from Sugablossom Cakes.
DeVoli Cakes take icing sheet couture to the next level by creating complementary floral plaque cut-outs to adorn the upper tiers of their beautiful vintage rose creation below.
A unique monochromatic wedding cake design in black and white with subtle grey shading makes a thoroughly modern statement below, but nonetheless bears that classic Nevie Pie vintage touch with edible lace trim set against a glamorous black iced backdrop (image by Cristina Rossi Photography).
One of Nevie Pie’s most loved wedding cake designs is the captivating ruffle wedding cake below with brightly coloured floral plaques and features in Natasha Collins brand new book, The Painted Cake (with full instructions to recreate this masterpiece plus tutorials for 20 other cake and cupcake designs).
Our final design below combines vintage, swallow-tailed bows with a cascade of pastel floral appliques in a wonderfully elegant wedding cake design by Jen’s Cakery.
