Edible icing sheets printed with vintage floral patterns or striking contemporary designs are one of our favourite ways to add impact to a cake design. Paired with beautiful forals, you can create spectacular wedding cake designs and even create a cake that perfectly complements the artwork of a bride’s wedding invitations for example.
Featured above are two outstanding examples above of what can be achieved in wedding cake design with edible icing sheets from Sweet Celebrations (left, image by Dave Abreu Photography via WedLuxe) and on the right, from Piece of Cake.
Antique gold works magically with the blue toned vintage floral pattern in the Sweet Celebrations design above, with trailing stems adding a beautiful bohemian touch. While edible lace trim creates the prettiest of finishes along the top edge of the patterned tier in the Piece of Cake design, above right.
Michelle Keel of Scrummy Mummy’s Cakes has blended a pastel pink floral pattern with antique gold lace and on-trend sage in her beautiful summer garden wedding cake above, dressed with pink ranuncula flowers.
Personalisation is huge in wedding cake design – brides and grooms just love adding their own personal and unique touch to their wedding wherever possible. Adding a handwritten snippet of their vows, a song lyric or a verse from a favourite poem is one such way to personalise their wedding cake.
Printed edible icing sheets make this a breeze – the chosen words can first be typed up in a selected font and then emailed to any of the many companies that specialise in printing edible icing sheets. Alternatively, handwritten messages can be written on wafer paper with an edible ink pen and applied to the cake, just as long as your handwriting is up to the job!
Pasteles Alma and Sweet Disposition Cakes have created two superb wedding cakes with handwritten details below (left and right, respectively).
The Vanilla Cake Boutique, Italy have crafted an elegant wedding cake design below adorned with sugar roses, creating an envelope effect on the centre tier opening to reveal a handwritten love letter.
Teal blue is a hugely popular bridesmaids colour but undeniably difficult to incorporate into a vintage wedding cake design. Nonetheless, Tamara Woutersen of Sweet Lake Cakes has done just that in her vintage lace and florals design below with a beautiful blue and green vintage rose pattern adding the perfect design highlight.
Edible icing sheets can be used also for a quick and handy cupcake topper design, creating beautiful floral cupcakes in a fraction of the time it takes to handpaint a floral pattern (and that’s if you are even artistically inclined in the first place, which unfortunately Cake Geek isn’t…). The fabulously on-trend vintage cupcakes (below left) are from the kitchen of Jolly Scrumptious Cupcakes.
Elegant buttoning detail enhances the beauty of this old style script wedding cake below by Sweet On Cake (image by Braedon Photography), sweetly topped with blush roses and hydrangea.
Gold refinements and shades of peach complement the antique style of this fabulous wedding cake deseign by the Layered Bake Shop featuring handwritten script.
Faded script adds an unmistakable aged finish to this beautiful single tier cake La Fabrik A Gateaux (below left).
A contemporary print paired with shiny metallics and a statement wafer paper flower, the distinctive design style of Stevi Auble of Hey There Cupcake is captured perfectly in the wedding cake, below left.
Stevi has long been a fan of the versatility of edible icing sheets and teaches you all her tips and tricks for incorporating printed edible patterns in cake design in her second Wafer Paper class now available on Craftsy, which includes the dahlia flower and cake design below left: Wafer Paper 2 by Stevi Auble on Craftsy.
Pink roses and sprays of green foliage really pop against the black backdrop in the vintage rose patterned design below right – all down to Stevi’s edible icing sheet magic!
The ultra pretty designs of Pip Studio have inspired the two beautiful celebration cakes below, decorated to fabulous effect using edible icing sheets for two inspired party creations (by Sweet Lake Cakes and Cakes by Jantine, left and right respectively).
