With sharp edges having overtaken rounded curves in cake decorating design trends, the avant garde cake shape of the moment is the cube cake design, having been propelled into the cake fashion spotlight by the designs of Maggie Austin.

Jorge Blanco of Sugar Couture Cupcakes & Cakes is also a proponent of this avant-garde cake shape, adding a touch of vintage to this contemporary cake trend with pretty lace adornment and a single coral rose in his design, above left.

Above right, Swedish designer Lina Veber has combined botanical elements with the modernist design of the cube cake for a splendid cake creation.

Continuing the classical floral theme below, Maggie Austin’s magnificent cube cake is crowned with an explosion of summer garden flowers. The color combination is pastel but ranges throughout the color wheel, perfectly complementing the old world bas relief molding and trailing ivy design elements. Maggie keeps with the perfect symmetry of the cube design and welcomes in autumn with her unique cake design below. Enveloped in organic fall imagery- berries, flowers, and acorns in bas relief – the cake is beautifully presented in a bird’s nest shaped basket.

As a master of texture, Maggie Austin delivers a superb design in her intricately crafted cube cake design below with row after row of tightly coiled rosettes in a multitude of sizes creating a an amazing design spectacle.

Inspired by an original design of Pamela McCaffrey of Made with Love Cakes, Vavi’s Cakes & Cupcakes re-created the beautiful floral gift box cake below in a perfectly shaped cube form dressed with a soft pink peony and pastel green ribbon.

Another of Pamela McCaffrey’s designs features below right, this time a striking column shaped wedding cake with contemporary cubed tiers. A beautifully arranged bouquet of sugar lillies creates a bridal veil effect, crowning this unique, textured modernist wedding cake.

Below left, a single tier cube cake is dressed with old-fashioned hydrangea and ranuncula for the perfect pairing of vintage and modern (image via Bride To Be).

Riany Clement of Bellaria Cakes Design incorporates a funky geometric pattern in her cube cake design below, using bright blue and white to create an eye-catching contemporary design.

Advertistment: Below are two cakes featured in the Wilton class on Craftsy, The Wilton Method Stunning Small Cakes (w/ Valerie Pradhan). On the left, a mosaic tile effect is created in shades of aqua, topped with soft pink water-lillies, in a beautiful, Asian-inspired cake design.

On the right, fabric effect flowers create a soft, feminine cascade to complement this perfectly cubed cake.

Below left, an “interrupted” chevron design creates a striking pattern in a contemporary black and gold design by It’s A Cake Thing by Jhoanee.

Revisiting Lina Veber, a single statement peony is showcased on a perfectly square cake below right, with the super stylish single colour scheme broken only by some deftly styled botanical foliage.

Neither the flower or cake shine outshine each other and have the viewer leaning in closer to examine the gentle textured effect

Maggie Austin’s fabulous pearl encrusted cube cake features below. Each side is faced with pearl-lined squares within squares, with larger pearls at the centre creating a focal point to the impressive design. Curling out from the top corner is a spray of white lily-of-the-valley blossoms that look like they are standing in awe of the craftsmanship on this cube cake.
