Delicate lines of scalloped piping are a timeless cake decorating technique that exudes elegance and is enjoying renewed popularity in cake design. It’s also a technique that’s surprisingly simple, even for those completely new to a piping bag. Hilary Rose Cupcakes have paired gilded gold and scallop piping (above left) to create a superbly elegant cake topped with soft pink sugar roses. On the right, scallop piping creates a fabulous netting effect against cream icing in this unique wedding cake design (image by Christina Brosnan Photography).
The uber-stylish cake collection of Peggy Porschen (above) includes a pastel pretty scallop piped cake design in a contemporary pink and purple palette for a fresh take on the classic design.
Jenna Rae Cakes have deconstructed the classic royal icing piped white wedding cake with drop string garlands and re-constructed it Jenna Rae-style with an extra touch of pretty (below).
Heavier piped lines create extra texture in the old world cake design (below left) by Ms. B’s Cakery, topped with a charming vintage carousel . Again, pearl piped scallops add texture to the Parker Lusseau Cakes and Pastries design on the right (image by Jose Villa Photography).
Moving away from piped designs, two artful variations on the classic scallop design feature in the stunning all-white wedding cakes below – with on trend Art Deco motifs below left in a design by Sweet On Cake, and paired with frills and lustred effects by A Piece O Cake (below right).
Sweet and Saucy’s design below uses perfectly placed petals to creates an eye-catching scalloped effect.
Below left, Coco Cake Australia’s “petal scallop” cake is imbued with soft peaches and cream tones for a delicate hint of colour. On the right, Studio Cake have created an exquisite Art Deco inspired wedding cake with the scalloped detailing highlighted in gold for a beautifully intricate cake design.
Perfectly created scallop cut-outs/onlays create a contemporary geometric pattern in the on-trend cake designs below by Coco Cakes (left) and Morningside Bakes, UK (right), in soft peach and blue shades.
Another interesting variation – this time on the frill cake design. Cakes by Danielle have added scalloped effect edging to their unique fondant frill cake design below.
Strings of silver dragees are cleverly incorporated into this wonderfully jewelled wedding cake design by The Caketress (below left, image by Kate Stoops Photography via WedLuxe) and Karen Seay of Cakes in Art has created a striking contemporary design dressed with colourful blooms, adding a beautiful feminine touch to the scalloped design.
Martha Stewart Weddings feature an interesting take on scallop piping with graduated pearl piped scallops creating added visual interest in the design second from right in the image below right.
Graphic art meets Art Deco design in the unique gold wedding cake creation by cake art trendsetters, Sweet and Saucy, below right.
A super creative combination of on-trend fondant doiles in miniature arranged in a scalloped pattern feature in this unique cake design by Chantel’s Cakery, finished with a beautifully embossed fondant ribbon.
