Nothing says vintage quite like a dramatic ostrich feather. And with the Roaring 20’s the vintage period of choice for many brides this year, we’re finishing our 1920’s wedding series this month with “Vintage Cakes with Feathers”. (See also our earlier features: Gatsby Wedding Cakes and Art Deco Wedding Cakes.)
Our feature cake above left simply oozes vintage sophistication with a single statement ostrich feather held in place with an antique brooch in a fabulous design by Intricate Icings Cake Design. To the right, Indian cake designer Parvani Kaur of Firefly India has created a beautiful composition of delicate sugar flowers with an opulent gold feather in a sophisticated palette of pale blue, gold and white.
Whilst there are a large selection of vintage style feathers available from millinery stores, you can also craft feathers from petal paste (gumpaste) if you want to create an entirely edible cake design. We have two tutorials here that show you how:
Top Canadian designer, The Cake Whisperer incorporates feathers in a number of her couture cake designs, the first of which is the superb wedding cake below left. To the right, the fabulous Sweet Sensations have created an art deco classic, also in a beautiful gold and white colour scheme (image via Style Me Pretty).
The Pastry Studio, always ahead of the newest trends in cake design, feature the beautiful feathered two-tier cake below left in their wedding cake collection. To the right, we have another statement cake from The Cake Whisperer with a stunning composition of sugar blossoms, pearls and a gold-tinted feather for a luxury single tier design.
Below, we have an elegant silver and white jewelled design from The Fondanista Files (left) where you’ll also find a great rice paper feather tutorial. To the right is a vintage lace design topped with a feather and floral arrangement for an extra touch of vintage glamour available from Solbijou on Etsy.
For the ultimate in glamour, the showpiece wedding cake design below by The Cake Whisperer is an absolute scene stealer with it’s luxiurant sugar bow, oversized flowers and feather arrangement – a study in sugar wow (with inspiration also from Kate Sullivan).
Below left, we have a Gatsby-inspired vintage feather wedding cake by cake superstars Connie Cupcake Luxury Cakes (left) and a beautiful jewelled and feather design by the super stylish Australian designer, Chrissy Lau of Miss Couture.
Up and coming Northern Ireland cake designers Cake Couture Northern Ireland, have designed a beautiful Gatsby-esque wedding cake incorporating art deco design, jewelled detailing and an elegant feather accent, below. (Image by Chris Semple Photography).
The much admired Little Cherry Cake Company have created their own unique take on the 1920’s theme with their vintage feather wedding cake below left, texturised with on-trend ruffles and pleats. To the right is another elegant example, incorporating feathers, peonies and petal ruffles, highlighted with pearlised lustre by the wonderful Coco Cakes.
Flapper-style cake designs are perfect for a 1920’s themed wedding and Zoe Clark of The Cake Parlour has created a stunning interpretation of this unique style (below left). You’ll find full instructions to re-create this elegant cake in Zoe’s latest book: Chic & Unique Vintage Cakes.
The beautiful black and white “flapper” inspired wedding cake below right is designed by Cupcakes by Louise, featuring elegant art deco detailing.
