Watercolour sugar flowers in soft faded pastels are the epitome of bridal elegance this year. Favoured by top wedding cake designer, Faye Cahill, using watercolour washes instead instead of petal dusts to softly colour sugar flowers is set to become one of the biggest sugar flower trends in cake decorating this year.

Fellow Sydneysider, Patricia Hardjopranoto of Yummy Cupcakes & Cakes is another big name designer who’s distinctive wedding cake designs feature giant sized blooms in watercolour pastels featured above and below (with the cake top right created by A Pocket Full of Sweetness at a Yummy Cupcakes class).

Softly coloured peony roses paired with pale gold and caramel tones, and matched with shades of sage green foliage, create an impossibly elegant colour palette in the two Faye Cahill designs below, with a nod to the 1920’s with art deco inspired piping, left.

Patricia Hardjopranoto shows a detailed glimpse of one of her magnificent gumpaste dahilas after its first coat of colouring, with one of her swish, giant size blooms finishing her elegant champagne and lace wedding cake design, below left.

The knock-out beauty of Faye Cahill’s custom lace wedding cakes make the perfect marriage with her watercoloured sugar flowers showcased in the two designs below with beautifully piped peacock feather lace (left) and an Alençon lace design right finished with a beautiful bouquet of peach blooms and blue-grey foliage.

A giant sized peach dahlia fanned by washed out mint-grey coloured foliage makes a romantic floral statement on this rustic summer wedding cake by Yummy Cupcakes & Cakes.

Barely there shades of peach, yellow and faded greens crown this simple floral wedding cake by Faye Cahill (below left) with dramatic chandelier style suspended gold cake on the right dressed with brightly coloured watercolour pansies – an exhibition cake created by Faye Cahill for the Super Moms International Cake Collaboration in 2014.

Stevi Auble of Hey There Cupcake uses watercoloured effects too in her cake art with the soft texture of her signature wafer paper flowers lending themselves perfectly to watercolour shaded designs, including the wedding cake below.

Watercolour poppies and roses add a pretty summer garden accent to the vintage lace trimmed celebration cake below by Faye Cahill in shades of mocha.
