With just a month to go, it’s time to start planning your Valentine’s cakes for 2014. For those in the cake decorating business, early promotion of a beautiful range of Valentines cakes as a alternative to flowers will reap rewards for your business. Indeed, mini “cakes for two” have been a surprise hit in the US with Duff Goldman’s Charm City Cakes kick-starting the trend Stateside.
We’ve chosen two subtle and stylish cakes as our feature cakes for Valentine’s this year. We just adore the sentiment of the vintage banner cake topper above (image via Style Me Pretty with photo by Our Labour of Love), whereas the rustic shades of the ruffle heart cake above left exude simple sophistication in a beautiful cake design by Tessa Huff of Style Sweet CA.
The ruffle heart cake is one of Style Sweet Canada’s signature cake designs with another beautiful example below in turquoise textured buttercream with a powder pink ruffle rose topper – cake design that would be perfect as a pretty engagement cake. Paper Pony have a very cute tutorial here to make the glitter heart cake toppers on the cake below right, which bring the wow factor to a simple cake design: glitter hearts cake topper tutorial (no longer available).
A pretty bunting cake topper makes the fabulous teddy bear cake below a very on-trend cake design suitable for lots of occasions, but the teddy holding a heart makes it a winner in the romance stakes for Valentine’s day. Imagine what an adorable engagment cake it would make if the teddy was holding the ring?! This exquisite teddy bear cake design is by the very talented Sharon Wee.
A miniature heart-shaped cake is a romantic gesture for an afternoon tea treat for a loved one on Valentine’s day (below right via Tumblr) and a selection of vintage style Valentine’s cookies also makes a very elegant Valentine’s gift (below right from Sugar Collection).

Valentine’s Day is always a popular time of year for couples to get engaged and the two superb cakes below by the much admired Australian designer, Hello Naomi would make an ultra pretty engagement cake to mark the special occasion.
Tiny rosebuds arranged in a heart shape add a beautiful pop of colour to the vintage green coloured iced cake below left from Taarten-Decoreren.

We have annother pretty heart-shaped confection below topped with a romantic bed of roses from Baking Obsession. The roses are moulded from pink tinted modelling chocolate and the cake is finished with a big statement bow for an truly elegant cake design.
To create a heart-shaped cake the tutorial below shows you how you can cleverly combine a round cake and a square cake into a heart shape (via Pinterest) for a super quick and easy Valentine’s cake.
One of our favourite decorating blogs, The Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle shows you how to create pretty mini roses with royal icing using a small star tip and a leaf tip. They’re really useful to have stored away in a box in a variety of colours for a quick decorating fix whenever you’re stuck for time and they work particularly well for vintage style cakes. New York’s Betty Bakery created the beautiful quilled heart design cake perfect for Valentine’s day, below right. (You’ll find more on this technique in our feature on Cake Quilling). And we have another pretty cake design below right with miniature hearts in various shades of pink dotted all over a heart shaped cake for a funky Valentine’s cake design (via Pinterest).
Bubba’s Bakery have created the fabulous retro style cake below with a “tatoo style” heart cake topper complete with angel wings for a statement Valentine’s cake.
We have another pretty heart-shaped cake decorated simply in polka dots below right from Country Kitchen Sweet Art.

Below, we have a funky red and white heart cake from ultra trendy US cake designers, the Whipped Bakeshop (below left) and a whimsical style Valentine’s cake with heart shaped strings of bunting (below right) from Just Call Me Martha to match the coordinating Valentine’s cookies above.
A simple heart-shaped chocolate fudge cake topped with glazed raspberries makes a great Valentine’s dessert cake (from Sweet Kingdom below left) and to the right we have a wow cake from My Cake School.com with lots and lots of piped chocolate hearts. For a really luxurious Valentine’s cake, the UK’s Cake Cucina have created the red-on-red wow cake below with piped lace detailing and statement rose on top.

Below right, Spain’s YoCuNa Sugar Art have designed an unbelieveably cute Valentine’s teddy bear cake, that would also double as another great engagement cake.

One of the simplest and more beautiful Valentine’s cake designs is the “I Heart You Cake” below left from Eat Cake Be Merry, a rich chocolate cake guaranteed to go down a treat.
The Dessert Queen, Brisbane has created the funky graphic lettering design below right with an extra pop of red for the day that’s in it.
